Institute of Peace2008 U.S. Institute of Peace
Summer Institute on International Peace, Security, and Conflict Management for Secondary School Social Studies Teachers

The United States Institute of Peace (USIP) is now accepting applications for its 2008 Summer Institute for secondary school social studies teachers, to be held August 3—9, 2008, in Washington, DC. USIP is an independent and nonpartisan national institution established and funded by Congress. Its mission is to help prevent, manage, and resolve violent conflicts by empowering others with knowledge, skills, and resources, as well as through direct involvement in peacebuilding efforts. Organized by USIP’s Education and Training Center for Domestic Programs, this week-long event is designed to assist teachers in attaining a greater understanding of peace and conflict issues, as well as to enhance their teaching skills and strategies in school settings where global understanding is critical. Drawing upon practitioners, scholars, and educators, the Summer Institute will examine the sources of global conflict and different approaches to peacemaking and peacebuilding in the current global environment, which presents unique challenges and opportunities for teachers striving to ready young people to take their places in an increasingly complex world. The application process is competitive. USIP will cover the costs of lodging and contribute to travel and incidental expenses. Secondary school teachers from a variety of disciplines and backgrounds are urged to apply. The application may be found at http://www.usip.org/ed/summerinstitute/siapp.php. The deadline for applications is 5:00 P.M. EST (Eastern Standard Time), March 31, 2008.

For more information please visit http://www.usip.org/ed/summerinstitute/index.html. Further inquiries regarding the 2008 Summer Institute should be directed to SummerInstitute@usip.org.

Announcing the Publication of the Agenda for Social Justice, Solutions 2008
The SSSP is pleased to offer you the Agenda for Social Justice, Solutions 2008, which represents an effort by our professional association to nourish a more "public sociology" that will be easily accessible and useful to policy makers. It is also a way to give something back to the people and institutions that support our scholarly endeavors. We hope that you find it helpful in your challenging work of crafting successful solutions to contemporary social problems. In all, it contains 11 pieces by SSSP members, covering a variety of social problems in three sections: global issues, Americans at risk, and health & welfare. This is an effort on the part of scholars at the Society for the Study of Social Problems to disseminate the findings in social problems research as freely and as widely as possible.

The web page for the project is located here: http://www.sssp1.org/index.cfm/m/323. On that page, you can download the full version, and you can link directly to the one-page briefs and individual chapters. The chapters are available for free download, and may be suitable as cost-effective supplementary readings in many social problems-related courses.
