Submissions Requirements for the WSSA News
The WSSA News accepts proposals for articles from members. Acceptance for publication is at the sole discretion of the editor. “Articles” refers to pieces ranging from one or two paragraphs to one or two pages; topics should be matters of general interest to a wide variety of social scientists. Brief pieces having to do with the organization itself, or its conference, will be considered, but articles having to do with the concerns, philosophies, or important questions of social scientists are preferred. Contact the editor at WSSA.Admin@nau.edu to propose a topic; include an approximate word count and an estimate of available date. Please note that the News is not a refereed publication; the pieces published are intended to be written in a style that is easy to read, and possibly entertaining. Pieces heavy on statistics or overloaded with citations are discouraged. Graphics are accepted, but authors should keep in mind that the News is currently published in black-and-white.
We would also like the Association’s newsletter to mark the important milestones in our members’ careers, acknowledge honors they have received, and extend commendations for their laudable actions and accomplishments. To do this, we feature a column, “Kudos, Laurels, and Milestones”, that appears whenever a reasonable number of submissions are made. Submissions are invited from all members, and should be made by the beginning of January, for the Spring issue, and by the beginning of September for the Fall issue.
They should be submitted in recognition of the authors’ colleagues, although we will accept very brief submissions about the author’s own accomplishments. We are not looking for basic CV or resume items, but for those things that deserve a little extra recognition.
Content guidelines: Items should be about our members, or about former members who played important roles in the Association. The timespan should be approximately one year prior to the issue’s publication. Academic accomplishments will probably be the most common, but related non-academic items are also welcomed - for instance, if a member were to be elected to City Council, or to receive a significant award from a civic organization. Items can be sent directly to the newsletter editor. They should include the name and affiliation of the recipient and no more than three or four lines per item. Items will appear in the order submitted.
